Self-exclusion in Michigan

How to put yourself on Michigan's self-exclusion list, what it covers, and what it does not.

1 of 11 things on this page could not be confirmed from an official source. They are marked, and each one says who to ask. We would rather leave a gap than fill it with a guess.

Programme
Two separate Michigan Gaming Control Board programmes: the Disassociated Persons List (DPL) for the Detroit commercial casinos, and the Responsible Gaming Database (RGD) for internet gaming and internet sports betting.michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026
Covers online betting
Yes, through the RGD, which 'allows a patron to voluntarily self-exclude from all Michigan regulated online gaming or internet sports betting'. You may exclude from online casino gaming, online sports betting, or both, and may choose a different length for each. The quoted description of the RGD is on the MGCB's responsible gaming page, which is why this field now cites that page rather than the FAQ. The second sentence is from the FAQ: 'The MGCB's RGD program allows an individual to choose two different lengths of exclusion for each gaming type.' โ€” https://www.michigan.gov/mgcb/resources/responsible-gaming/frequently-asked-questions (read 2026-10-03).michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026
Covers casinos and shops
Only the three Detroit commercial casinos, through the DPL, which 'allows a patron to voluntarily self-exclude from the Detroit commercial casinos for life'.michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026
Covers the lottery
Not confirmed. Neither MGCB programme page addresses the Michigan Lottery. The MGCB describes its own remit as 'commercial casinos, horse racing, millionaire parties, internet gaming, internet sports betting, and fantasy sports' and notes separately that 'Other forms of legalized gaming include tribal casinos and lottery' โ€” but it does not say whether any exclusion list reaches lottery play. Ask the Michigan Lottery directly. Check with Michigan Gaming Control Board, Responsible Gaming Section (888-223-3044).michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026
How long you can choose
RGD (online): one year or five years, chosen separately for online casino gaming and online sports betting. DPL (Detroit casinos): no term is offered at sign-up; the MGCB states only that 'You may apply for removal from the list after five years.'michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026
Can it be undone
RGD: no. 'Can I remove my name from the Responsible Gaming Database once I'm in it? No. You have the option of selecting 1 year or 5 years of self-exclusion from online gaming or online sports betting or both. Your name will be removed automatically when the selected self-exclusion time expires.' DPL: 'You may submit a DPL Request for Removal Application form only after you have remained on the Disassociated Persons List (self-exclusion program) for a minimum of 5 years', and 'You will not be removed from the Disassociated Persons List until the Michigan Gaming Control Board has processed your application and notifies you in writing that you have been removed from the DPL.'michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026
What happens when it ends
Not confirmed. We could not confirm this from an official source. Check with Michigan Gaming Control Board, Responsible Gaming Section (888-223-3044).
How you sign up
DPL (Detroit casinos): in person only โ€” 'please contact the MGCB at 888-223-3044 to schedule an appointment. The application must be completed in-person at either MGCB Detroit Cadillac Place or Lansing office.' RGD (online gambling): complete the RGD application in person at an MGCB office during business hours, or 'Print and complete the application. Ensure it is properly notarized and email to MGCB-RGD@Michigan.gov' or post it. A notary is required for the posted or emailed route. Confirmation 'could take up to 45 days from application submission'.michigan.gov, checked 3 October 2026

Worth knowing before you start

Two important gaps. First, the online list and the casino list are separate sign-ups, and the RGD takes up to 45 days to take effect, so you are not protected online the day you post the form. Second, the DPL carries a criminal consequence the other states' lists do not: 'if you voluntarily participate in the DPL program and are observed on the premises of a Detroit commercial casino, you will be charged with criminal trespassing', punishable by up to a year's imprisonment and a fine up to $1,000, with winnings confiscated. The MGCB also notes that Michigan operators 'may prohibit you from engaging in other forms of gaming in Michigan or another state', including affiliated casino properties worldwide.

Done? The rest of the hour: blockers, a bank block, closing the accounts, telling one person.
