Self-exclusion in Colorado

How to put yourself on Colorado's self-exclusion list, what it covers, and what it does not.

1 of 11 things on this page could not be confirmed from an official source. They are marked, and each one says who to ask. We would rather leave a gap than fill it with a guess.

Programme

Covers casinos and shops
Yes. Persons on the list are prohibited from 'Gambling at casinos' and 'Placing sports wagers at on-site sportsbooks'.betsmart.colorado.gov, checked 3 October 2026
Covers the lottery
Not confirmed. The Division of Gaming describes the list as covering 'all forms of gaming under the regulatory purview of the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission and the Colorado Division of Gaming' and then itemises only casinos and on-site and online sportsbooks. The Colorado Lottery is a separate division and is not mentioned either way. Ask the Colorado Lottery directly. Check with Colorado Division of Gaming, Colorado Department of Revenue, 1707 Cole Blvd., Suite 300, Lakewood CO 80401 (303-205-1300).betsmart.colorado.gov, checked 3 October 2026
How long you can choose
Three options, each a minimum rather than an end date: one year (the minimum offered), three years, or five years. The registration form asks you to confirm 'that you have three options for your minimum self-exclusion period'. No lifetime term appears among them.betsmart.colorado.gov, checked 3 October 2026
Can it be undone
You are never released automatically, but early release can be requested, which makes Colorado weaker than most states here. 'No person is automatically removed from the exclusion list when the selected or directed time period ends' and 'Individuals will continue to remain on the Self-Exclusion List until they request to be removed, after they've completed their self-exclusion time period.' Removal in all cases 'will need approval from the Division of Gaming Director'. Critically: 'Individuals that are on the exclusion list and have not completed their self-selected period of self-exclusion may petition the Colorado Division of Gaming's Director for removal from the list.'betsmart.colorado.gov, checked 3 October 2026
What happens when it ends
Not confirmed. We could not confirm this from an official source. Check with Colorado Division of Gaming, Colorado Department of Revenue, 1707 Cole Blvd., Suite 300, Lakewood CO 80401 (303-205-1300).
How you sign up
Two routes, and the paper one needs a notary or a Division witness. Online through the Division's web form, where 'Voluntary submission of your Social Security Number is required if you are requesting to be self-excluded online'. Or on paper using form DR 9681, emailed to dor_gamingselfexclusion@state.co.us, posted, or dropped off at the Division of Gaming office with a copy of your state-issued ID — the paper form ends in a notary block ('SUBSCRIBED AND SWORN to (or affirmed) before me'). To avoid the notary: 'For those who wish to visit one of the Division of Gaming offices to have a witness to your signature, please call for office hours' (Lakewood 303-205-1300, Central City/Black Hawk 303-582-0529, Cripple Creek 719-689-3362).betsmart.colorado.gov, checked 3 October 2026

Worth knowing before you start

If you need a door that cannot be reopened, Colorado is the weakest of these ten: there is no lifetime option, and the Division's own page says someone who has not finished their chosen period may petition the Director for early removal. The flip side is that nothing lapses by accident — you stay on the list after your term until you actively ask to come off, and the Director must approve. The paper route requires a notary unless you go into a Division office to have your signature witnessed, which is the step most likely to stall someone. Be aware too that casino companies 'may enact a Responsible Gaming Program in which persons signing up for the Colorado Division of Gaming self-exclusion list are banned from the organization's properties worldwide'.

Done? The rest of the hour: blockers, a bank block, closing the accounts, telling one person.
